Project Statement

Participating in sports can erase identity to such a fine point that only one aspect of the self can remain. To be a part of a team sport, that last bit of self submits to the group, morphing with the other teammates in a conglomeration of consciousness. When they merge into this singular entity, I become interested. The group transforms into a knot of bodies, and I hold that knot for the viewer to untangle. Amidst this grapple, the figures become indistinguishable.  Do they know who they grip onto or who digs into them? Would they know if they only caught themselves? By removing the context of the activity and focusing on this entanglement, these instances of touch become more intimate.  Here, the ritual of sport is broken, no longer are the hands reaching with power for an opponent but instead creeping along an unidentified body. The spectators can release their expectations and observe moments of touch that would normally go unquestioned.
